Top distance runner Ryan Shay died during the U.S. men's Olympic marathon trials Saturday, overshadowing what was supposed to be a showcase day for the sport.
Shay collapsed about 5 1/2 miles into the race and was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m., New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg said. He was 28.
Southern Connecticut State sophomore tailback Jerom Freeman rushed for an NCAA Division II record 418 yards in the Owls' 56-28 victory over Bryant on Friday night.
Freeman, who carried the ball 34 times and tied the school record with five touchdowns, surpassed the old Division II mark of 410 yards, set by Andrew Terry of Ferris State on Oct. 2, 2004. The NCAA all-division record is 441 yards, set by Dante Brown of Division III Marietta, who did it against Baldwin-Wallace in 1996.
Interesting tidbit:
The Division I record is 406 yards by LaDainian Tomlinson of TCU against Texas-El Paso in 1999.
